The Interactive TV teams within this department build and support the BBC's 'big screen' experiences, including iPlayer, Sounds and live events across our broadcast and connected TV platforms. Based in MediaCityUK, Salford, you'll join our Product TV team to deliver a world-class connected TV experience for BBC iPlayer and Sounds. Your work will involve developing innovative application features, performing integrations across a range of TV devices, and enhancing the TV platform that powers both iPlayer and BBC Sounds. You will have an opportunity to work on software at a scale that is hard to find in the country - this is your opportunity to help define how our audiences engage with the BBC on the big screen. Interview Process 1 hour technical coding test & 1 hour 15 minute values based competency interview Interviews to commence on the: 30th of April this may be subject to change Main Responsibilities Be accountable for the design and development of effective software that meets given the complex, strategic business needs for immediate team and broader BBC Take ownership, and drive cross-team initiatives that deliver value across the wider TV estate Promote alignment of the team's products and services with BBC technology and architecture strategy Provide technical knowledge and insight to peers and colleagues Review and give constructive feedback on others' code Ensure the team's software works well in its operating environment Troubleshooting and resolution of issues throughout the product life cycle, including out of hours support for incident resolution Define and document the team's best practice and standards Contribute to the continuous improvement of the team's delivery and development processes Mentor more junior software engineering team members Learn new technologies and keep abreast of existing technologies, and help introduce them where appropriate Help out with various recruitment activities such as conducting interviews. Are you the right candidate? We are looking for a person with a passion to always improve, who is willing to learn from and share your knowledge with other people. It's okay if you don't have all the following points covered, we will support and encourage your growth in role from day one. - Experience designing and writing robust software for large scale applications in a fast changing environment with rapid release cycles - Good communication skills; you are adept at describing technical details to varying levels of people - internal and external to the BBC - Evidence of a logical and methodical approach to solving complex problems - Proactive individual who can identify and pursue relevant learning and development goals - Demonstrable experience in Javascript ecosystem and cloud technologies - Expertise in test automation and broader testing and QA concerns - Mentoring experience - Experience of utilising DevOps practices to ensure high availability of key products or services Essential Skills Developing object oriented and functional Javascript software. Debugging Javascript and performance issues. Writing unit and integration tests. Connecting to APIs using fetch and XHR. Understanding of HTML and XML document formats Expertise in modern JavaScript/ TypeScript and its associated frameworks or libraries. Strong experience with test-driven development and a deep understanding of testing and QA practices. Skilled in addressing operational concerns like monitoring, performance testing, scaling, availability, resilience, and security. Experience working in professional software development environments with established processes and best practices. Proficient in translating product requirements into robust, scalable technical solutions. Solid understanding and application of design patterns in software development. Track record of delivering high-quality work to completion across a team. Familiarity with agile methodologies like Scrum or Kanban. Experience mentoring and developing junior team members, fostering a culture of growth. Full-stack development experience, including backend services and APIs.
