Consultant Paediatric Perinatal Pathologist Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust Are you passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of children and young people? Applicants should ideally have received specialist training or have significant experience in Paediatric & Perinatal pathology. However, candidates with a general histopathology background and a willingness to undertake Paediatric pathology will be welcomed. Appropriate support will be given. A part-time post can be considered on agreement. The Birmingham and Women's NHS Foundation Trust currently has Histopathology services located on 2 sites Paediatric pathology being based at Birmingham Children's hospital and Perinatal pathology being based at Birmingham Women's hospital. Main duties of the job The Histopathology Department based at the Children's Hospital site is currently UKAS-accredited and holds a HTA license for the post mortem section. We provide a wide spectrum of specialist diagnostic histopathology services, including Paediatric gastroenterology, dermatology, surgery, hepatology, nephrology, transplant services, oncology and neuro-oncology. The Cellular Pathology Department based at the Birmingham Women's Hospital is also UKAS accredited and holds a HTA license for the post mortem section. It is a recognised Regional Perinatal Pathology Centre providing a fetal and perinatal autopsy service to the whole of the West Midlands region. Fetuses, including babies with congenital anomalies, stillborn babies and infants, are referred to the department for post mortem examination. The Department also offers limited post mortems, including external examination with X-Ray and photographic documentation of salient features. Placental histopathology is also undertaken following a variety of pregnancy complications and also after pregnancy loss, if a post mortem is declined. In addition, post mortems are undertaken for HM Coroners around the West Midlands and further afield. You must be fully registered with the GMC or within 3 months of attaining your CCT or equivalent at interview stage. Support and benefits to assist with international relocation are available. Main place of employment Paediatric Pathology Birmingham Children's Hospital The Post The post will be split between the Birmingham Women's Hospital site (Perinatal) and Birmingham Children's Hospital site (Paediatric Pathology). However, the focus between Paediatric & Perinatal is negotiable. It is a requirement of your employment that you will be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the trust, either on an ongoing or temporary basis, according to the demands of the service. Duties of the Post To provide diagnostic paediatric/ perinatal pathology to enable the delivery of a high standard of patient care To participate in clinical and other service activities with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care and in compliance with the Trust's clinical strategies To undertake diagnostic paediatric/ perinatal pathology and/or service-oriented research To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development Main Duties and Responsibilities The post holder will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of Paediatric/ Perinatal diagnostic services to the Birmingham Womens and Childrens NHS Foundation Trust (BWCFT) and the other Trusts with which BWCFT has contractual arrangements. Multi-Disciplinary Team Meetings (MDTs) The appointee will be expected to attend and contribute actively to the following MDTs BWH Mortality Meetings BWH Fetal Pathology MDT Meeting BCH Oncology MDT Meeting BCH Gastro MDT Meeting BCH Retinoblastoma MDT Meeting BCH Dermatology MDT Meeting Teaching & Training All Consultants are expected to contribute to the support, teaching and training of doctors in training, including the role of Educational Supervisor in the educational contracts for junior staff in the specialty. This may include travelling to other units or centres to deliver training lectures to medical and other clinical staff. Research Consultants are encouraged to become involved in clinical research. Clinical research undertaken as part of the Trust's research and development programme will be allocated specific time in a consultant's job plan. Consideration will be given to the support required for any research agreed as part of the job plan. Clinical Governance All Consultants are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. The appointee will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and of audit of their own clinical work as part of the annual appraisal process. EQA The post holder is expected to participate in national or regional EQA scheme(s) appropriate to their professional practice. CPD The post-holder is expected to be responsible for their continuous professional development. Funding, through study leave budgets, is available for participation in CPD activities. Participation in the Royal College of Pathologists CPD scheme is compulsory. Evidence of participation in CPD will be required as part of the annual appraisal process. Clinical Management The post holder will be expected to take part in the delivery and development of clinical services within the Service and Financial Framework of BWC and in line with the Trust's clinical strategies. The post holders will be expected to participate in the activities of appropriate Departmental, Directorate or Trust Committees and Working Groups as required. All consultants are expected to contribute to the management and development of their clinical service. Additional clinical management roles will be recognised in the consultant job plan. Person Specification Qualification Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview. Higher Degree (MD, PhD, etc). Qualifications Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. FRCPath (Paediatric Pathology) or evidence of equivalent qualification.
