Position Description
This position is permanently located in Mooresville, NC and is temporarily located in North Wilkesboro until early 2009. The Enterprise Systems Management (ESM) System Engineer II’s role is to assist in the development, testing, documenting, deploying, and maintaining of the components of the Enterprise Systems Management infrastructure. This includes coding, testing and deploying scripts and programs for systems monitoring and management, performing software upgrades, configuration management, day-to-day support activities such as researching and resolving incidents, and deploying existing/new new ESM applications to infrastructure resources.
ESM Systems Engineer II will be responsible for executing installation, configuration, testing, support and documentation for Lowe’s Enterprise System Management tools. Candidate will be expected to understand the Enterprise Systems Management suite of products and be able to effectively deploy and manage their utilization. In addition, as other monitoring/alerting tools are introduced into the environment the candidate will be required to make recommendations as to how to integrate and support those tools.
You’ll participate in the development and periodic upgrades to the Systems Monitoring Strategy, systems monitoring hardware and software enhancements. You’ll also provide ongoing corrective and preventative maintenance to improve reliability and availability of the Lowe’s Enterprise Systems Management infrastructure; as well as assist in preparation of proposals, reports, architectures, designs, specifications, and operational documentation.
Essential Functions: • Develop and maintain systems monitoring processes and procedures • Ensure enterprise systems management is implemented according to requirements • Assist with maintenance of the Enterprise Systems Management infrastructure • Provide level 2 technical assistance for ESM systems management tools • Participate in ESM 24x7 on-call rotation for support and problem resolution • Completion of Request for Services • Development of technology solutions, testing, and documentation • Demonstrate an ability to lead and manage medium projects. • Support infrastructure monitoring environments (server, network, storage, mainframe, database and application infrastructure) ensuring accuracy, availability and responsiveness. • Design and develop monitoring thresholds and custom alerts and response scripts. • Develop, maintain and report relevant monitoring metrics capturing customer relevant issues. • Work collaboratively with the Operations, Engineering, Applications and Security and other groups to develop, deploy, document and maintain a cohesive enterprise systems management architecture. • Develop and implement the monitoring agent strategy including maintenance and release schedules • Assist with development of policies and governance of monitoring solutions at Lowe’s. • Develop and publish daily operations task checklists for execution • Work closely with Computer Operations and their level 1 support teams to ensure monitoring solutions meet their needs • Participate with the management of monitoring, systems management and framework vendors. • Contribute to the annual budget management • Participate in tracking and managing compliance to audit controls
Position Requirements
4 year degree. BS Computer Science, Engineering or similar degree 5+ years systems engineering experience. Preferred large-scale environment experience in Fortune 100 companies with at least twelve months at System Engineer level II position or equivalent/higher. In addition, at least 1 year recent and continuous experience in the installation, management and support of BMC Patrol products including at least two of the following: Patrol Agents, Portal, Event Manager, Impact Manager, TMART, KM management or Topology Discovery Excellent knowledge and experience with scripting languages, PERL and UNIX shell scripts (BSH, KSH, Bash, Javascript,), as it related to enterprise monitoring, event management, framework maintenance and automation. Knowledge of Programming Language such as Java VB, C/C++ is desirable. Mastery of one of the following with a minimum of three to six years of system engineering experience. Solid foundation of two of the remaining skills. C Programming UNIX System Management Multiple Scripting Languages Network Communications Database Administration Windows Server Administration Working knowledge of TCP/IP, networking, snmp, DNS, firewalls, failover (HACMP, Veritas, Microsoft Clustering) as it relates to framework management and operation Working knowledge of communication services for Unix and Windows Servers including operating systems setup/permissions as related to BMC, MOM and other Systems Management disciplines Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment Strong overall Computing knowledge - Infrastructure (mainframe, Unix, Linux, Windows, Wily, Micromuse Netcool, MQ Series, Websphere etc.) Experience as a developer of Enterprise Management monitoring solutions across heterogeneous distributed environments. Experience in maintaining currency of appropriate Enterprise Management technology products.
Preferred Qualifications
