Position Description
This position reports to the IT Director for WSJ.com and Barrons.com in the Electronic Publishing Business Technology Systems (CMG Online) department. The Development Manager is responsible for managing a group of application developers working on maintaining web based applications and system components in support of the CMG Online business of Dow Jones. From a team management perspective, will evaluate and assess employee performance; mentor others in their technical and personal development; provide team members with individual attention, feedback and encouragement. From a business management perspective, will translate broad organizational goals into concrete objectives, plans and priorities; deliver results and solutions that meet customer needs; represent the CMG Online technology group inside Dow Jones and with outside vendors and groups; appraise effectiveness of new emerging technologies in conjunction with product development, sales and marketing groups; review and recommend process improvements for an effective software development lifecycle.
Position Requirements
The successful candidate must have strong management experience in leading a group of development staff. In addition, the candidate will demonstrate large scale project engagement experience as well as specific fluency in web related technologies including J2EE application servers such as JBoss, relational database management systems such as Oracle, object-oriented programming languages such as Java, object modeling paradigms such as UML, markup languages such as HTML and XML and the Unix operating system. Must have demonstrable qualifications in fully understanding all aspects of large-scale system development including scalability, integration and maintainability; establish core competencies in software architecture, system integration, database migration and design, workflow process automation, network security and enterprise system management; strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to build credibility across levels and across businesses; experience related to the media, information and publishing industry; Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering, with a preference for an advanced degree.
